Here are ways to keep your home safe for Undas 2019

Observing Undas or All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day has been an integral part of Philippine culture. Falling on November 1st and 2nd, respectively, this special holiday (or holidays, depending on which day they fall), is normally spent by remembering and honoring departed family members and loved ones and visiting their graves. Normally seen as an extension of the largely Western Halloween (which falls on October 31st), Undas in the Philippines is very similar to the Mexican holiday Dia de Muertos.

As Undas 2019 is fast approaching, many are already making plans about out-of-town trips to visit departed loved ones’ graves. And as many families venture out of their homes, it is also a time, according to the Philippine National Police (PNP), that burglars take advantage of your absence and break inside unguarded houses. So before you leave your home unattended during the holiday, here are some tips from PNP you should consider.

  • Do not share your travel plans and itinerary
  • Refrain from posting any vital information about your travel on any social media channels to prevent any unwanted attention to your property. It would not hurt nor matter that much if you post it a little bit late or when you are already home.

  • Lock your properties
  • Secure locks on doors, windows, and gates before leaving. Shut all the window curtains and ensure that your valuables are not visible from the outside. Also, don’t leave any valuable things lying around, such as bicycles and motorcycles without putting either locks or chaining them to a sturdy post.

  • Unplug the appliances
  • Before leaving your home, make sure to unplug appliances that are not in use or by turning them off at once through the main breaker. Looking at these would prevent an eye-popping electricity bill and will also keep your home safe from fire.

  • Have someone to look after your property
  • Perhaps the most reliable way to keep your home safe is by asking a trusted neighbor or friend to keep an eye on your property. It also makes sense to inform them about your travel dates and itinerary so that if anything happens, it could easily be reported to you and to authorities.

We all want a peaceful observance of Undas and peace starts in systematically securing your property before leaving it alone. It is always better to plan ahead to enjoy a stress-free and fun holiday.
